JACINDA ARDERN VISITS MACKELLAR GIRLS ✨

She may be one of the Northern Beaches’ newest residents, but former New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has wasted no time inspiring some of our local students.

Ardern recently visited Northern Beaches Secondary College’s Mackellar Girls Campus in Manly Vale, meeting students as part of the school’s High Potential and Gifted Education program.

The former PM, who led New Zealand from 2017 to 2023, spoke to the girls about leadership, believing in themselves, finding their own path and the importance of pursuing the things they are passionate about.

One student, Jada McLean, said she was particularly struck by Ardern’s message that feeling like you don’t belong can actually help make someone a more empathetic, humble and thoughtful leader.

Year 11 student Violet Milne added, “It is so inspiring to realise that she has held the highest position in her country and has been and remained a kind and compassionate person.”

Principal Kyle Scott said it was important for students to hear from role models who show that aspirational achievement was within reach of each student.

SWIM SEASON OFFICIALLY OPENS! Beach Patrols Kick Off This Weekend - And Shelly Beach Will Be Patrolled During Peak Summer For the First Time... 🌞

Northern Beaches Council reports they're gearing up for another busy beach season, with patrols returning to beaches across the coastline this weekend, including Shelly Beach for the first time over the Christmas holiday period, helping residents and visitors enjoy the region's world-famous beaches safely throughout spring and summer.

Ahead of the official start of the season, Council lifeguards have already commenced patrols at Freshwater Beach on 29 August, while patrols at the remaining seasonal beaches will commence on Saturday 26 September.

Manly Beach and Dee Why Beach continue to be patrolled year-round, providing beachgoers with safe swimming options throughout the year.

Mayor Sue Heins said Council's lifeguards and volunteer lifesavers play a vital role in keeping the community safe.

"The Northern Beaches is home to some of Australia's most iconic beaches and every year millions of people come here to enjoy our incredible coastline. As we welcome the start of another beach season, I encourage everyone to swim between the red and yellow flags, follow lifeguard advice and look out for one another when visiting our beaches.

"Our lifeguards and volunteer lifesavers do a remarkable job keeping beachgoers safe and we're grateful for their dedication and professionalism." 🙏

Last season alone, Council lifeguards carried out 960 rescues, provided first aid to 4,017 people. Council lifeguards will once again work closely with Surf Life Saving NSW and the NSW Government's Shark Management Program this season, with drone surveillance providing aerial monitoring.

In a first for the Northern Beaches, Shelly Beach will be patrolled from 21 December to 31 January 2027.

The afternoon will begin with a chat between Tom and Dee Why Salty Surf School co-owner Dan O’Connell, before Tom leads the group through a breathwork and meditation session overlooking Dee Why Beach.
