Chatswood is welcoming a delightful theatre experience for its youngest audiences this September, with Especially on Birthdays combining music, movement and interactive play to explore something every little person eventually has to navigate – growing up.
Growing up can feel like a very big deal when you’re little – particularly when it means leaving behind something familiar. An upcoming children’s theatre performance in Chatswood explores those big feelings in a joyful and imaginative way, with a special drama workshop before the show.
Especially on Birthdays is an interactive visual theatre production created for children aged three to seven and their families, coming to the Zenith Theatre & Convention Centre on Sunday 27 September as part of Willoughby City Council’s Chatswood Culture Bites program.
A recent six-year-old reviewer said of the show, “Better than any movie I’ve seen”.
The story follows a pair of twins who are about to turn six and receive some rather unsettling news: after their birthday, they’ll be placed in separate classes.

While one twin is boisterous, brave and ready for what comes next, the other is quiet, apprehensive about change and comes up with a solution – simply stay five forever.
What follows is a funny and tender exploration of sibling relationships, friendship, change and finding the courage to grow.
Rather than simply watching from their seats, young audience members are invited into the experience through music, movement and playful interaction. Everyday objects including paper and boxes are transformed to create an imaginative world reflecting the emotions and experiences of childhood.
Adding to the magic is an original score by Matthew Wilder, best known for his work on Disney’s Mulan.
Designed to be inclusive and accessible, Especially on Birthdays encourages children to participate, interpret and use their imaginations, making every performance a little different.

And if your little theatre-lover would like to get involved before the show even begins, Shiny Heart Productions will also host a special 30-minute drama workshop at 3pm.
Through movement, play and imagination, children will explore big feelings, build confidence and discover the courage to be themselves. No previous drama experience is needed – just a willingness to join in and have fun.
The workshop costs $10 per child. Parents and guardians need to attend but do not need to purchase their own workshop ticket. Be quick to book for this, though, as there are limited spots.
The performance is recommended for children aged three to seven and their families and forms part of Chatswood Culture Bites, Willoughby City Council’s program of music, theatre, comedy and live entertainment in the Chatswood CBD.
