Offering laid-back charm, a divine menu and unparalleled beach views, The Basin Dining Room at Mona Vale Surf Club is summer’s hottest new dining destination.

It’s always exciting when a new waterside restaurant opens on the Beaches, and The Basin Dining Room is already causing waves in the local community. Local chef Doug Fraser and his restaurateur wife Kylie opened the two-level restaurant at the newly redeveloped Mona Vale Surf Life Saving Club just before Christmas.

“Doug and I live in Mona Vale and were watching the surf club being built,” Kylie recalls. “Whilst taking a swim at the beach, we were chatting about how amazing it would be to open a restaurant in the newly built surf club. Strangely that afternoon my husband had a phone call from a friend informing him that the Council was taking tender applications for the restaurant space at the surf club. Doug worked fast at preparing a proposal and honestly, we didn’t think we would get it but we did!”

Doug and head chef Dan Weier (Restaurant Lovat, 4Fourteen) crafted a seasonal opening menu that celebrates seafood in all its forms, and they work closely with local producers to ensure the best quality. The rare tuna pasta with free-range egg spaghetti, parmesan, rocket, chilli and capers is already a crowd favourite, along with baked sashimi-grade scallops in chilli/kombu butter.

“The smoked tomato and Queensland lobster risotto are flying out the door,” Kylie adds.

There are plenty of non-seafood dishes including Ranger Valley grain-fed scotch fillet MBS3+ with The Basin’s signature steak sauce and French fries. Knowing the locals, their casual snacks and light salads will be popular too including fish burgers, Caesar salad, and fish and chips.

A generous beverage list accompanies the food with signature Appletini cocktails, craft beers, and a range of French, Italian, New Zealand and local wines. Plus, who could forget dessert?

”Our Basque cheesecake with locally made marmalade is getting great reviews,” Kylie says. “The individual cheesecakes are baked at a high temperature, so the top is slightly burnt and the centre is cooked through but perfectly soft.”

The Basin Dining Room hosts special events year-round, including upcoming four-course dinners on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.
