From creative collaborations to a Chargrill Charlie’s cafe, everyone’s favourite chargrill chicken store is surprising fans with several new offerings that no one saw coming…
When humble chicken shop Chargrill Charlie’s first opened in 1989, with the view to cooking good food for “family, friends and the community”, no one would have guessed that a national takeover was in order. Fast forward 22 years, and they now have 17 stores across Sydney and Melbourne.
They also have quite the celebrity following with the likes of Chris Hemsworth, Rita Ora and Michael Clarke recently popping in for their bbq chook fix. Other famous fans include Nicole and Keith, Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman, foodie queen Nigella Lawson, Oprah Winfrey, numerous sports stars – and who could forget the headlines made by Justin Bieber when he sat down for a quarter chicken and salad at the Mosman store.
Clever Collabs and Charlie’s Pyjamas
It’s become obvious, especially over the last few years, that Chargrill Charlies is more than just your average corner chicken and chips store. There’s some very clever marketing ideas being hatched and a tendency to boldly tread where other takeaway stores have not.
First came the Charlie’s merchandise – a big call for a takeaway food store. However, confidence in the brand paid off and the popular merch now stocked includes hats, aprons, shirts, and even baby onesies. Specialty items pop up regularly as well, such as Chargrill Charlies pyjamas (or ‘breakfast shirts’ as they’re called).
Clever collaborations are also popular, and currently include ‘destination’ towels featuring images from photographer and lifeguard Anthony Glick. The towel collection heroes three local beaches in Sydney that have Chargrill Charlie’s stores nearby – Bondi, Coogee and Shelly.
There was also a popular collaboration with dessert queen Anna Polyviou, who created a cookie dough for customers to purchase at Chargrill Charlies and create scrumptious cookies at home.
Charlie’s Moves Onto Cafes, Milkbars and More
It’s the latest evolutions by the well-known store, however, that are really pushing the boundaries in terms of charcoal chicken store expansion. The Coogee store, for example, has its own ”Salad Cube” where viewers can watch the salads being made every day.
To top that, the Bondi store opened recently, replete with in-store Milk Bar! “Welcome to our very first Chargrill Charlie’s Milk Bar exclusive to our new Bondi store! We’ll be serving our signature soft serves, thickshakes and milkshakes, taking you back to your favourite Aussie summer memories! Come say hello at our Milk Bar window on Gould Street.”
Meanwhile, the Drummoyne store has its own adjoined cafe. It’s aptly named ”Charlotte”.
While our local Northern Beaches stores are staying traditional for now, there is one exciting addition to the franchise that we can all keep our eyes (and ears) out for. In keeping with the new milkshake and soft serve direction, and in what may be the biggest surprise move of all – Chargrill Charlies now has its own mobile ice cream truck.
Officially called Charlie’s Milkbar on Wheels, it’s making its way around to all stores regularly to give out free soft serve ice creams. Keep your eye on their socials for when it’s next visiting near you.
