A bold new concept will see empty shopfronts in Manly awaiting redevelopment reimagined as colourful and exciting pop-up market spaces. The first new indoor market for Manly opens this month!

It’s exciting seeing the clever and inventive way that businesses are adapting to the new world with retail affected so much by extreme weather and lockdowns. One such concept will soon see Manly’s empty shopfronts used as pop-up indoor market stall spaces for small businesses and local artisans.

First off the mark in this dynamic new retail concept is the former Brands Hub/Global Brands site at Manly, which will be reactivated as an indoor marketplace from Saturday, April 9. The site at 6 The Corso has been earmarked for development since 2019 and empty since January 2022.

In a new initiative for retail, the site will now host a lively indoor marketplace showcasing an exciting range of ethically produced and sustainable local fashion, homewares, art, beauty products and more.

Concept designer and founder of The Pop Up Collective Judith Treanor says the site will initially operate for one month to gauge consumer sentiment. and depending on foot traffic, extend until such time as the site is redeveloped.

Treanor says indoor marketplaces are a perfect fit for big cities striving to build a sense of fun and community after a difficult few years.

“Our model is based on concept stores found all over South-East Asia where brand owners have mini shops within a big shop,” Treanor says. “The mini shops are inexpensive and provide small business a foothold in retail centres they previously couldn’t afford. And building owners receive rental income they normally wouldn’t,” she said.

Treanor says feedback from social media suggests Sydney shoppers are crying out for something different. “The Pop Up Collective delivers that excitement; shoppers can choose from an eclectic mix of ethically produced fashion and homewares not normally found in shopping centres.”

Local Northern Beaches councillor Georgia Ryburn has welcomed the pop-up indoor marketplace as “exactly the kind of reinvention and activation Manly needs”. “The collection of local brands gathered all in one spot bring a new experience of shopping to the Corso and another great ‘must-see’ for tourists,” she said.

Open Thursdays – Saturdays 11-5pm and 10-4pm Sunday, Manly Pop Up Collective is located at 6 The Corso just a short walk from Manly Wharf.
