Sunshine and beach days aren’t the only things to look forward to this summer… Cult favourite Gelato Messina confirms it’s opening at Manly very soon….
Gelato powerhouse Messina needs no introduction. Founder Nick Palumbo and his creative team have been scooping weird, wacky and wonderful flavours to the people of Sydney since 2002, all in the name of putting smiles on faces.
From signature salted caramel and white chocolate to house-made dulce de leche and vegan chocolate sorbet, Gelato Messina have perfected their iced confectionary and gained a cult following.
Northern Beaches folk have been waiting patiently for Messina to arrive on our shores, and a pop-up at the Harbord Hotel has tied us over… till now! Gelato Messina have recently announced they’re opening a full store in Manly in the coming weeks.
“Our Manly site is on the corner of Market Lane and Sydney Road,” confirms Dana Newman from Messina. “We’re hoping to be open by the end of this year.”
“Manly and the Northern Beaches is one of our most requested areas to open in and has been on the cards for years, we were just waiting for the perfect site. There’s nothing better than a post-swim gelato. We also did a few pop ups at the Harbord Hotel in Freshwater and some frozen dessert deliveries during the lockdowns to the community which built up a bit of a following.”
What Gelato Messina Dreams Are Made Of…
“Every Messina store has a unique design,” says Dana. “The Manly store is like nothing we’ve ever done before.”
Gelato lovers can indulge in: “35 signature gelato flavours and 5 rotating weekly specials. Customers will also be able to buy our range of eight sculptural gelato cakes, including our semifreddo (semi-frozen) mousse cakes which can travel for up to 3 hours or be brought along to picnics without melting,” says Dana. “You’ll also be able to find our 1L bottles of fresh Jersey Milk from our dairy farm in Numurkah, Victoria, dessert spreads and custom merch.”
Every flavour is made in-house from scratch by the chefs at Messina HQ, including the brownies, pralines, fudges and all toppings/additions that are added to the gelato.
And look out for the fun and often quirky Messina specials – cookie crumbs, smashed up apple pie, potato chips, bacon, fudgy brownies, you name it – Messina is likely to try it. Specials last for seven days from the day Messina posts them on Instagram/Facebook (unless they sell out prior) and are available in all stores throughout Australia. The team predicts they’ve made over 3500 different flavours so far and still haven’t run out of ideas.
Gelato Messina also makes its own range of gelato cakes, which can be picked up or ordered from any store. The fan favourite is Dr. Evil’s Magic Mushrooms with dark chocolate gelato, peanut cookies, dulce de leche, flourless chocolate sponge, popping candy feuilletine grass base and chocolate glaze. There’s also tiramisu tart, boysenberry cheesecake and a decadent bombe Alaska.
Keep your eyes peeled on Gelato Messina’s social media for further updates. If you’re craving a sweet or fruity scoop in the meantime, visit one of their 16 other NSW stores in NSW, including Darlinghurst, Bondi or Glebe, or check out their first Messina concession store inside Harris Farm, Lane Cove.
