This August, Q Station is launching Harbour Heat, a new sauna experience set against the backdrop of Manly’s Historic North Head.

Long before “wellness” became part of modern culture, North Head was already a destination for healing, holding nearly 200 years of restorative history. Quarantined ships arriving in Sydney in the 1800s famously pulled up at Q Station to allow their passengers to recover from their long voyages, and ensure that they were free from disease before settling in Sydney.

The Aboriginal community has also long recognised North Head’s healing properties, a legacy of place and energy that predates European settlement.

That legacy returns today, reimagined as Harbour Heat.

Launching on Saturday 15th August, the venue will open with a weekend wellness event for visitors to enjoy the new facilities. The event is set to include complimentary sauna sessions, mindfulness with Luke McLeod, pilates classes and live music. These complimentary experiences are then 20%-off for visitors Sunday 16th August.

After de-stressing and decompressing on their brand-new contemporary-style facilities, visitors are then welcome to wander the site’s idyllic beach and enjoy a meal at the Q Station cafe, bar, or harbourside restaurant Boilerhouse.

Positioned right on Q Station’s private wharf, Harbour Heat invites guests into a contrast therapy experience entirely set in nature: with a scenic sauna experience, followed by a direct plunge into the harbour from Q Station’s private beach. It’s contrast therapy unlike anywhere else in Sydney.

“Harbour Heat is an initiative designed to bring the community together,” said Steve Carrodus, General Manager Q Station. “It’s a beautiful space to spend time with friends, take a quiet moment to yourself, or connect with someone new.

This new sauna experience is also notable for being one of the only 100% guided sauna experiences in Sydney. The centrepiece of their facilities is a traditional wood-burning stove, which provides that softer, more natural heat that many sauna purists swear by. Pouring water over the hot stones releases a gentle steam (called ‘löyly’ in authentic Finnish sauna culture) in a comforting wave. Between the crackling of the natural fire and the soothing mist, the experience is as sensory as it is restorative.

Visitors can then unwind with a complimentary cup of one of Q station’s herbal teas, served hot or cold. Outdoor showers are also available. However, the team recommend a refreshing plunge into Sydney Harbour from their private beach, located just steps from the sauna.

Up to 15 guests can experience each session; however, private bookings for your group are available.

This initiative sits at the intersection of wellness, heritage, nature and ritual. It  honours the headland’s past while remaining firmly grounded in the present. Following their opening weekend, Harbour Heat will also announce a broader wellness programme. This will feature additional experiences, such as sound healing and yoga sessions.

Harbour Heat is available from Wednesdays through to Sundays from sunrise to sunset. Visitors can also access the venue’s free shuttle service from Manly, with arrival times aligning with each session. For more information, see their timetable here.
