No, you haven’t time-travelled back 30 years. I Know What You Did Last Summer (the 2025 sequel) is filming on the Beaches right now!

Some readers might remember when the cult slasher film I Know What You Did Last Summer was released in 1997. Now, nearly 30 years later, the film is getting another sequel. And it’s being filmed right here.

Reader Vanessa Daines posted photos to Northern Beaches Living showing movie production vehicles – including trailers, catering trucks, and security vehicles – parked at Newport Beach this week.

The size of the crew indicated this was more than a local Home & Away shoot. Locals spotted signage which confirmed it was indeed the 2025 sequel, which is reportedly called I Never Forget What You Did Last Summer.

Movie website IMDB reports that both Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. are both starring in the new film, along with newcomers Chase Sui Wonders (Bodies Bodies Bodies), Madelyn Cline (Outer Banks), Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, and Jonah Haur-King. These newcomers were also recently seen at the Gladiator II premiere in Sydney.

The original film, which grossed $125 million worldwide, followed four teens who were hunted by a mysterious killer one year after covering up what they believed to be a fatal car accident. The low-budget hit helped launch the careers of Jennifer Love Hewitt, Ryan Phillipe, Freddie Prinze Jr., and Sarah Michelle Gellar. The franchise later expanded with I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (1998), a direct-to-video sequel I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer, and an Amazon Prime TV series.

It’s the fifth recent blockbuster to be filmed locally, and it seems the Northern Beaches really is the new hot spot for Hollywood films.

As we’ve reported over the last year, Mark Wahlberg’s Play Dirty was shot here, Sean Penn’s all-star movie C*A*U*G*H*T had scenes filmed in Terrey Hills, Ryan Gosling’s The Fall Guy filmed in Ocean St in Narrabeen, and the surprise hit at the box office last summer, Anyone But You, was filmed in Palm Beach and Terrey Hills.

It’s no surprise that US production companies are heading this way with the incredible backdrops available, large swathes of bushland in which to hide dozens of film trucks (and keep filming locations under wraps), and lots of incentives and assistance from the Government.

The entire Sydney Harbour Bridge was shut down to assist filming of The Fall Guy. And Anyone But You director Will Gluck said: “We used a great local crew. We also decided to do all our visual effects in New South Wales because some of the greatest VFX artists happen to be working in Sydney.” The film also received the Commonwealth Location Incentive from The Australian Government and funding from the NSW Government.

What a coup for our local area as well with money injected into local businesses and so many jobs created!

I Never Forget What You Did Last Summer is due for release in October 2025 to coincide with summer in the Northern Hemisphere. Add it to your must-watch list!

Here’s our coverage from back in May of this year, when Marky Mark was filming in local bushland if you missed it:
