Get pumped for one of the Northern Beaches most wacky and fun community events on Sunday 23rd February 2020.
This year’s Manly Inflatable Boat Race will see over 800 participants and spectators take part in this zany community event on the last Sunday in February – all for a wonderful cause. Awarded ‘Community Event of the Year’ at the 2016 Australia Day Awards in Manly, the 16th annual Manly Inflatable Boat Race is set to take over Manly & Shelly Beaches. The race has raised over $220,000 for charity in its 16 years with proceeds this year going to Tour de Cure.
Denver Beven, event founder, says ‘This event is such a highlight on the Sydney calendar because it’s just so much fun. Racegoers have a blast battling through the waves all dressed up in their crazy, colourful inflatables and spectators love the excitement, vibrancy and mayhem… It really is a great, fun day at the beach for young and old.’
The event is expected to be bigger than ever this year. Registration and pumping of floats will take place at the south end of Manly beach near the Surf Club and the race will commence at Shelly Beach. To participate in the race, paddlers need to be confident swimmers, don their favourite fancy dress costume (the crazier the better), pump up an inflatable raft (think rubber duckies, pool ponies and pink flamingos) and make their way around a 1km course from Shelly, out around the Manly Life Savers & buoys and back to the shore.
The race is on for young and old with no rules other than to have fun! Plenty of prizes are up for grabs including first & last over the line, best fancy dress, craziest boat, wackiest team and many more, all presented afterwards at The Hotel Steyne who have kindly donated a well-deserved sausage sizzle for all racegoers.
‘It’s a wonderful, happy day for everyone. Hundreds of participants and thousands of spectators and tourists come from far and wide to see the crazy outfits and the high jinks that go on in the race through the waves to win. Participants just love it – it’s incredibly exhilarating and a great way to help a worthy cause’ said Bevan.
