One of the Northern Beaches’ most stunning and iconic venues has just celebrated 97 years of treating the community to incredible food, amazing views and luxurious accommodation.
At Jonah’s Whale Beach, the atmosphere is a delicate dance between legacy and modern indulgence. Every visit feels layered, like the Valrhona Caramelia dessert, and meant to be savoured slowly.
What began in 1929 as a small roadhouse has evolved into a venue that balances fine dining, boutique accommodation, and a level of refinement few Northern Beaches establishments can match.
Reaching its 97th year is no small feat but it’s easy to see why it has not only endured but remains the place to go for any special occasion.

“It is a moment of immense pride for everyone at Jonah’s,” says General Manager Niels Sluiman. “A testament to the vision of those who came before us and to the incredible team that continues to bring that vision to life every day.”
Few venues last nearly a century, but according to Niels, Jonah’s longevity comes down to a simple philosophy. “Longevity comes from a relentless commitment to quality, a deep connection to the community, and the ability to stay true to our identity. Guests return not just for a meal, but for an experience.”
Dining Shaped by the Ocean
The Whale Beach setting plays a defining role in that experience.
“The setting is very special, and there is very little that compares to it,” Niels explains. “Overlooking the sweeping ocean and pristine beach, every visit feels breathtaking. The natural beauty, the sounds of the surf, and the changing light create a sensory backdrop that complements the food and makes each visit unforgettable.”

It is a view that has quietly witnessed generations of celebrations.
“Some families have shared stories of coming here across three or four generations,” Niels says. “We have guests who tell us they visited fifty years ago with their grandparents and are now here with their grandchildren. It feels very special to be part of those memories.”

Food That Reflects Joy in Dining
In the kitchen, Executive Chef Rey Ambas leads the menu with a focus on seasonal ingredients and classic flavours.
“Our kitchen is led by our talented Executive Chef Rey Ambas, who champions seasonal, locally sourced ingredients and a balance between creativity and respect for classic flavours,” Niels says.
“The philosophy is simple. Every dish should reflect the quality of the produce, the beauty of the ocean setting, and the joy of dining.”
Among the dishes guests often return for is the grilled King Prawn, served with intense lemon emulsion, fresh house-made salsa verde, and delicate grapefruit caviar.
For those who prefer something heartier, the Kidman Rib Eye, marbled score three plus and weighing 500 grams, arrives with truffle mash and orange mustard.
And for many diners, the finale is the now well-loved Valrhona Caramelia dessert. Layers of chocolate mousse, caramel, and crumble are served in hand-blown glass bowls resting on individual pieces of driftwood. As Niels describes it, the dish is both “stunning and delicious.”
The menu continues to evolve while keeping the dishes guests return for.
“We maintain a core of signature dishes, so guests know they can always enjoy the proteins they love,” Niels explains. “At the same time, we introduce seasonal creations that surprise and delight returning diners.”
A Northern Beaches Icon
Over the decades, Jonah’s has also quietly welcomed a number of notable visitors.
“Jonah’s has welcomed a mix of guests over the years, from local luminaries to international celebrities,” Niels says. Among them have been Queen, One Direction, Nicole Kidman, Sir Anthony Hopkins, Eric Bana, and, more recently, Jonathan Bailey.

Yet regardless of who walks through the door, the goal remains unchanged.
“The focus has always been creating an exceptional experience for every guest,” Niels explains.
As Jonah’s moves toward its 100 year milestone, that commitment continues to guide the next chapter.
“The future is about honouring our legacy while embracing new opportunities,” Niels says. “The next chapter will combine tradition, innovation, and the unmatched beauty of Whale Beach.”
