In what is THE feel good story of the week (or maybe year!), a lost dog has been reunited with its owner after going missing for seven days.

Joy, a five-year-old Airedale Terrier ran away on Friday May 17, when she got spooked by a local fireworks display. She ran several kilometres away, ending up on the rocks between Whale Beach and Bangalley Head in Avalon.

Rescuers believe she kept herself alive by drinking rainwater in the puddles on the rocks.

In dramatic rescue scenes, Broken Bay Water Police were called in to help when local fishers spotted the distraught Joy caught on the rocks.

“WP42 responded with one officer swimming onto the rocks reaching the stressed animal,” says a spokesperson for Broken Bay Water Police.

“With a lot of encouragement, rock hopping and carrying the pup for over an hour, a suitable location was found to successfully extract her from the surging waves. She was then swum back to WP42 using a rescue tube.

“Through the magic of Facebook and our awesome community the dog was identified as “Joy” an Airedale Terrier lost on Friday 17th May who had been missing for 7 days.”

The Water Police had the pleasure of returning Joy to her loving family later that afternoon, when the community recognised her from the posts her owners had put in local Facebook group, What’s On Avalon.

Owner Tiger Robbins, updated the community with thanks and overwhelming relief Joy was home safe.

“Joy has been found! Some fishermen found her on the rocks at Barrenjoey headland. Thank you to our awesome community for helping us track her down. The kids and I can’t thank you enough.”

What an incredible story, and a happy, nay, JOYful ending for this family.

We hope Joy makes a speedy recovery!
