A simple daily habit by a local has inspired a new children’s book called ‘Kimmy and the Little Planet Helpers’
Kimmy and the Little Planet Helpers, written by Northern Beaches’ resident Rogan Carroll, is inspired by his wife Kim who quietly picks up litter on her walk home each day to prevent it from reaching local waterways and the ocean.
“What started as something small – just picking up a few pieces of rubbish – really stuck with me,” says Rogan. “It made me realise how powerful everyday actions are, especially for kids who learn by watching what we do.”
The book follows Kimmy, a young girl who notices litter in her local environment and takes action with the help of her friends and a magical sparkling bag.
Through the story, children are introduced to key environmental values including responsibility, teamwork, and caring for nature. It aims to help young readers understand how small actions can make a big environmental difference.

Designed for children aged 3–8, the book also includes a “Facts for Parents” section. This is to encourage conversations about how litter impacts local ecosystems, wildlife, and waterways.
Living on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, the couple says the coastal environment played a major role in shaping the message behind the book.
“We’re surrounded by beautiful beaches, bushland and waterways,” Rogan says. “It’s confronting to see how easily rubbish can make its way into that environment. We wanted to create something that helps the next generation understand their role in protecting it.”

The book has already begun resonating with parents and educators looking for practical ways to introduce environmental awareness to young children in a relatable and engaging way.
Rather than focusing on large-scale environmental issues, Kimmy and the Little Planet Helpers emphasises simple, achievable actions. This reinforces the idea that everyone, regardless of age, can contribute to a cleaner and healthier planet.
