We’re keeping our fingers crossed that the iconic Beach2Beach Charity Run and Festival will go ahead at the end of next month – and this year there are some amazing ambassadors, including local Olympian Melinda Gainsford-Taylor, Guy Leech, Zali Steggall OAM, Tom Carroll and Steve ‘Beaver’ Menzies.
Ask any elite athlete how it all happened and they’ll likely tell you that their pathway to gold started as a kid, probably in their backyard, their schoolyard, the local park or pool.
They might also tell you that the journey to greatness was a series of small steps, and that setting little goals or milestones along the way is one of the secrets to getting on and making it happen.
Melinda Gainsford-Taylor knows all too well how the little things can make all the difference, particularly when you are starting out.
Having achieved international greatness and hero status on the track, Melinda is now focused on passing on her knowledge and learnings through her MELGT Speed Clinics and this has been set up to coach and mentor the next generation of young athletes.
That’s the kind of inspiration that the organisers of the inaugural Beach2Beach Fun Run and Festival were looking for when they approached Melinda to come on board as an event Ambassador for this years event.
“Local events such as these are great stepping stones for everyone… be it as a milestone, fitness achievement, the first step on your way to an Olympic dream or just a great day out, it’s all about making a decision and getting out there,” said Gainsford-Taylor.
That’s also the reason Guy Leech, another local hero has played a part in the event for the last five years. As Guy says, “I’ve been fortunate to have achieved some great results as a kid and at my peak as an athlete… my inspiration came from getting involved in local events and being inspired by champions I could look up to.”
“If my involvement helps inspire young kids to do the run, or motivates mums and dads to get involved, I know that’s a good thing for their health as well as the charities that the event supports”, said Guy.
Robert Van Geest, co-organiser of the Beach2Beach, really values the input of heroes such as Melinda and Guy.
“Because all proceeds from Beach2Beach go to charity, the more people we can bring around the event, the greater the outcome for the whole community in all sorts of ways… and our ambassadors provide so much inspiration for people to get involved.”
As well as Melinda and Guy, the 2021 Beach2Beach is also being supported by new ambassadors Zali Steggall OAM, Australia’s most successful alpine skier and current Independent Federal Member for the seat of Warringah; former world surfing champion Tom Carroll; and local sporting legend, Steve ‘Beaver’ Menzies.
Of course, the Beach2Beach Fun Run and Festival has also achieved some milestones of its own. Now in it’s 28th year, the event has generated in excess of $5.5million for charity.
