In Avalon, where evenings often unfold slowly after long beach days and familiar routines, Masala Cove has introduced a new place for locals to gather over food.

Opening just recently in November, new family-run restaurant Masala Cove brings modern Indian flavours to Avalon village in a way that feels comfortable, thoughtful, and well-suited to everyday life on the Northern Beaches.

Located just off Old Barrenjoey Road, Masala Cove works easily into local rhythms, whether that’s a casual dinner midweek, a relaxed weekend meal with family, or takeaway on the way home. The response from the community has been immediate and encouraging.

“The encouragement, feedback, and word-of-mouth support have meant everything to us as a family-run business starting out,” says owner Gurpreet Batra. “From locals popping in multiple times a week to families choosing us for special occasions, we’ve felt genuinely welcomed.”

A Kitchen Built on Experience

Behind the menu is a team of chefs bringing more than 40 years of experience from India’s most respected hotels and international kitchens. That depth of knowledge shapes food that feels confident and well-balanced, without being heavy or overworked. Traditional techniques sit alongside a lighter approach that suits the coastal setting.

“Indian food is deeply expressive,” Gurpreet explains. “Every dish tells a story through spices, technique, and tradition. What we love most is its ability to bring people together, whether it’s a simple curry or a celebratory meal shared at the table.”

The menu spans curries, tandoor dishes, street-style starters, and seafood, alongside a drinks list of cocktails, wine, and beer. Spice levels can be adjusted to suit individual preferences, and vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and dairy-free options are integrated throughout the menu.

On our visit, the Oceania onion bhaji stood out, crisp and light with the accompanying mint sauce, while the butter chicken was rich and creamy, with a smooth, flavorful sauce that was just right. The freshly made naan was warm, soft, and generous, perfect for sharing across the table. Each bite had a nice balance of spice, creaminess, and crunch.

Comfortable, Casual, and Welcoming

More than anything, Masala Cove is designed to feel easy. “We want guests to feel relaxed and cared for, like they’re dining at a friend’s home by the beach, but with elevated food and service,” says Gurpreet. “Approachable and memorable, without feeling formal or intimidating.”

Families, couples, and groups of friends settle in naturally, while takeaway and delivery options have filled a gap for quality late-night food in Avalon. Looking ahead, the team is excited to continue evolving with seasonal dishes, creative cocktails, and community-focused events.

“We hope Masala Cove becomes a trusted local favourite,” Gurpreet says. “A place people return to again and again, and feel proud to bring others to.”
