Redevelopment work is officially commencing on the Sydney Academy of Sport’s Athletics Track, which has been in disrepair for far too long.
In great news for local athletes, the NSW Government has now allocated $6.7 million to the development and construction of the new synthetic athletics track at the Sydney Academy of Sport at Narrabeen. Like its predecessor, the new track will support both elite local athletics programmes and community initiatives and schools alike.
The project will deliver a new World Athletics (WA) compliant synthetic athletics track, complete with a moisture resilient surface, new asphalt subbase, drainage and stormwater system upgrades, and accessibility improvements.
Office of Sport Deputy Secretary Adam Berry has joined Member for Wakehurst Michael Regan, Member for Pittwater Jacqui Scruby, and CC Pines Pty Ltd Executive Chairman Ben Pines to turn the first sod on the project, alongside NSW athletics respresentatives. CC Pines Pty. Ltd is to lead the delivery of the project, with the support of specialist athletics track surface consultants Polytan.
“The Sydney Academy of Sport Athletics Track is a vital piece of sporting infrastructure that provides hundreds of Northern Beaches athletes, from Olympians to fun runners, with a place to hone their skills and improve their times,” said Minister for Sport Steve Kamper.
“The turning of the first sod is a symbolic milestone that will give the athletics community renewed hope that the finish line on the return of the track is within sight. I’d like to thank the Member for Pittwater and Member for Wakehurst for their ongoing commitment to this project.”

“The commencement of construction is great news and what the Northern Beaches athletics community had been hoping for,” said Member for Pittwater Jacqui Scruby. “It will be great to see athletics training and school carnivals back where they belong, and I look forward to joining Minister Kamper later this year to fire the starting gun on the first race at the new track.”
Similarly, Member for Wakehurst Michael Regan said that the development milestone “is fantastic news for local athletes.”
“Once completed, the new World Athletics (WA) compliant synthetic athletics track will see athletes from the Northern Beaches and across NSW set personal bests and break records.”
The new track is set to be complete during Q3 2026, in time for the 2026-27 athletics season. During construction, the temporary grass athletics track at the Sydney Academy of Sport will remain available. This temporary 400m track features six lanes and is located on Oval 1.
Meanwhile, the designated throwing and jumping areas adjacent to the closed track will remain available during construction. However, this is subject to weather, maintenance requirements, and construction activity. Attendees are to watch for on-site signage and updates from the Centre.
