Hidden away in Ingleside, New Leaf Nursery is a not only a treasure trove of plants, flowers, and quirky homewares, it also offers a chicken petting zoo, golf ball hunt for the kids and a surprise around every corner.

The Northern Beaches is famous for its picturesque beaches and coastal cliff walks, but many have yet to discover the hidden oasis that is New Leaf Nursery. This local, family-owned nursery in Ingleside specialises in sustainable gardening, permaculture and landscaping, and it’s an utterly delightful place to discover and explore – especially with kids.

Husband and wife team, Daniel and Simone Yackich took over the business 14 years ago and transformed the previous palm nursery into the full-service gardening wonderland. There’s something to catch your eye in every nook and cranny, and they’re also focused on what’s best for the planet.

“We are here to inspire people to have a go at gardening and live more sustainably,” says Simone. “We reuse and repurpose, so the aesthetic of the place is constantly changing and evolving.”

“Our nursery is a great place to enjoy for the whole family,” Simone continues. “Kids love the chicken petting zoo and the golf ball treasure hunt throughout the nursery where they discover many different animal statues, dinosaurs, a life-size tractor and real wildlife.”

Those interested in starting a veggie garden can peruse New Leaf’s generous variety of backyard edibles and herbs ranging from $1 seedlings to mature fruit, nut and citrus trees. They also stock a wide variety of bush tucker including finger limes, lemon myrtle and native plum.

While the kids play, parents can enjoy cold drinks and cookies from the kiosk. Be sure to pick up some farm-fresh, free-range eggs to-go, plus local honey, self-grown organic fruit and vegetables, and free garden mulch.

The qualified permaculture team also offer free in-house consultations or can visit the customers home to provide quotes and advice on services including paving, irrigation, fencing, planting, chicken coops, decking, garden makeovers and more. There’s also an expansive range of potting mixes, fertilisers, garden ornaments, water features, garden beds, worm farms and compost bins. This accompanies an impressive selection of exotic and native plants, ranging from shrubs and palms to cacti and bonsai.

“We provide friendly in-store advice on how to improve and maintain your garden to make sure it thrives,” Daniel notes.

“We’re so proud to be part of such a diverse local community,” Daniel says. “A place where people of all ages and walks of life can come to connect with others (plants, animals and people) in a relaxed outdoor environment.”
