Head Along to the First Boardriders Inclusive Surfing Comp!

UPDATE: Due to the rain, this event will now be held on Saturday June 1, 2024.

The Northern Beaches Para Surfer Boardriders (NBPSB) is hosting a unique event designed to raise awareness of para surfing, encourage participation, and build a stronger surfing community. The 2024 Boardriders Inclusive Classic is set to be a major event on the Northern Beaches surfing calendar, and will take place on Saturday, June 1, 2024.

The day kicks off at 8am with a fun competition featuring surfers from both the MVB (Mona Vale Boardriders) and NBPSB clubs. Participants can fuel up with a BBQ breakfast before hitting the waves. The competition continues through the morning, followed by a delicious spit lunch around midday.

The afternoon promises an exciting exhibition and expression session. Spectators can witness the talents of past and present Australian Irukandjis Para Surfing Team members, followed by a showcase by surfing legends in the expression session. The day concludes with club finals, followed by a chance to relax and unwind at the Mona Vale SLSC, Cooks Terrace with live music, refreshments, and a grazing table.

A major raffle will be held throughout the event, with all proceeds going towards a worthy cause. Funds raised will be split between the NBPSB and MVB, supporting their vital initiatives as outlined on their respective websites.

This event is more than just a competition; it’s a celebration of inclusivity in surfing. Inspired by her experience at the ISA World Para Surfing Championships, NBPSB founder Em Dieters envisioned a collaborative event that would mirror a professional competition. Attendees can expect commentary during heats and finals, post-heat interviews, and a festive atmosphere at the beach with food trucks and music.

Surfing NSW has pledged its full support to the event, recognising the importance of the NBPSB’s vision. Together, they aim to create a clear pathway for para surfers at the grassroots level. The hope is that this event will serve as a template, inspiring other regions to establish their own para surfing clubs and host similar community competitions. This initiative has the potential to connect para surfers across the country, providing them with more opportunities to compete locally and fostering a strong sense of community.

The NBPSB is Australia’s first, and possibly the world’s first, active para surfer boardriders club. Established in June 2023, the club boasts two current world champions among its members, several of whom compete internationally. The NBPSB provides a structured pathway for para surfers to progress from local competitions to the international stage.

The MVB club has been instrumental in the NBPSB’s success, offering unwavering support that has been crucial in getting the organisation off the ground. Both the NBPSB and MVB rely on funding from memberships, donations, sponsorships, and grants to operate.

Funds raised by the 2024 Boardriders Inclusive Classic will be used to support the NBPSB’s setup costs, equipment purchases, and program development. A key goal is to acquire a lockable trailer to improve the club’s mobility, allowing them to travel to different beaches based on conditions. This trailer would securely store essential equipment such as beach wheelchairs and access mats.

The MVB, on the other hand, is channelling their fundraising efforts towards the development of their Mona Vale Junior Development Program led by Jasper Welsh. Recognising the positive impact surfing can have on mental health in young people, this program aims to provide benefits beyond just surfing skills, fostering responsibility and drive in its participants.

Organisers are actively seeking sponsors and donors to support these valuable initiatives that are making a significant difference in the surfing community. If you’re interested in getting involved, attending the event, purchasing raffle tickets, or exploring sponsorship opportunities, you can find more information and contact details through the NBPSB website or social media channels.
