Northern Beaches Council says they’ll finalise major repair and upgrade works to the much-loved Mona Vale and Whale Beach rockpools in time for the summer holiday season.
The recent works at Mona Vale and Whale Beach rockpools, assisted by the Special Variation to rates, include surface repairs, replacing pool access stairs and handrails, improving access, replacing sections of coping, rebuilding scuppers, and undertaking general repairs – all designed to preserve the pools’ structural integrity, water quality, user comfort and safety.
Mayor Sue Heins welcomed the upgrade, saying, “The extensive renovations, carried out over the past three months, ensure these iconic community spaces are safe, accessible and ready to be enjoyed by residents and visitors alike.
With origins dating back to the 1930s Depression-era relief projects, the Mona Vale and Whale Beach rockpools have long been recognised for their unique coastal locations and deep community ties.
“Our ocean pools are a special part of life on the Northern Beaches. These upgrades ensure these treasured facilities remain a safe and welcoming place for everyone to swim, cool off and connect with others.”
“By investing in the maintenance and enhancement of the Mona Vale and Whale Beach rockpools, we are supporting the wellbeing of our community and safeguarding these beautiful spaces for generations to come. The restoration of the rockpools forms part of Council’s ongoing programme of investment in local infrastructure, recognising the vital role these amenities play in fostering an active, healthy and connected community.
Sydney’s Northern Beaches boasts 15 ocean rockpools, many of which have been providing safe swimming for between 50 and 100 years, and regular maintenance is essential to their preservation given the challenging coastal conditions.
Whale Beach rockpool is now open again for use and Mona Vale rockpool is expected to reopen in early December.
