After years of catering deliciousness all over Sydney, Leo Nakamura, the grill master behind Smokey Mary’s, has finally opened his dream restaurant.

The shops off Warringah Road at Narraweena are a convenient location to grab takeaway and stock up on groceries, and now locals have another reason to visit: Smokey Mary’s BBQ.

Smokey Mary’s catering in Brookvale has been feeding hungry Sydneysiders since 2016, and owner, Leo has finally fulfilled a lifelong ambition to open his own restaurant.

“Catering was the cheaper option to start our own business,” Leo explains, “but as a chef, opening a restaurant was always my dream.”

Finding the perfect location, however, proved to be a happy accident. With sky-high rents in Manly and Narrabeen, Leo stumbled upon the vacant Narraweena shop. “It needed a lot of work,” he admits, “but I saw it had everything I wanted for my first BBQ shop.”

Stepping inside Smokey Mary’s is like stepping into a meat lovers paradise. The menu boasts a hearty selection of Texas-style BBQ classics – smoked brisket, pulled pork, and juicy sausages – all infused with the rich flavour that’s become synonymous with Smokey Mary’s.

Alongside the traditional offerings, the menu features a “Monster BBQ Plate” – a carnivore’s dream overflowing with smoked meats, and a Philly cheesesteak that Leo declares his “new favourite item.”

Sides are no afterthought at Smokey Mary’s. The BBQ corn and mac and cheese are already customer favourites, offering the perfect counterpoint to the richness of the meats.

The response to the new restaurant has been overwhelming. “We were expecting to be busy,” Leo says, “but not that much. We’ve been open for just over a week and we have a full house every night. We are overwhelmed with the response.”

With the success of the Narraweena location, Leo hints at the possibility of more restaurants to come, with the intention of showcasing his passion for wood-fired cooking. We’ll have to wait and see where the team pop up next, but in the meantime, grab a napkin and head down to Smokey Mary’s – but book ahead!
