If you’re craving a hearty German feast, Austrian Beer Bar & Restaurant in Narrabeen is the place to settle in with a stein – just make sure you come hungry!
The atmosphere at Narrabeen’s Austiran Beer Bar & Restaurant is relaxed, with a menu that feels designed for sharing while enjoying a few drinks with friends. It is easy to imagine a group ordering a selection of sausages, schnitzels and pretzels and finishing with something sweet.
There is nothing delicate about the food here, the portions are decidedly hearty and that is very much part of its appeal – this is comfort food with character.
The Bratwurst comes with creamy mashed potato, mustard gravy and sauerkraut, delivering all the flavours expected from a classic German sausage.
As for shnitzel, I am admittedly the queen! If you crumbed a paper towel, I would eat it! But here, it’s spot on for real flavour (and meat) and very substantial. The pork schnitzel is topped with a creamy mushroom sauce and served with chips and salad, making for a generous plate that certainly doesn’t leave anyone wondering where the food is.
There are plenty of other traditional German treats to tempt the appetite here too, including freshly baked pretzels and traditional croquettes made with potato, cheese and ham. In an unexpected cultural twist, the menu also has a Latin influence with a side menu including empanadas and tostadas.
There are plenty of options on the dessert menu, but the traditional apple strudel is not to be missed. Cherry strudel is also available, along with other sweet treats, but the apple version is a fittingly classic way to finish a German feast.

Our lunchtime visit was a little early in the day to tackle the restaurant’s succulent pork knuckle, which is served with sauerkraut, bacon, onion, roast potatoes and gravy. But with Oktoberfest now on, it is worth planning a trip to indulge.
The Austrian Beer Bar & Restaurant’s winter menu is just about to come to an end as well, so get in quick for the sausage tasting plate, Goulash and mulled wine before they disappear.
It’s not the place to go on the Beaches for a vegetarian, but if you’re craving generous comfort food, German beers and tradition, the Austrian Beer Bar & Restaurant is the place to bring your friends – and your appetite!
