As Australia’s elite Rugby Union team, The Wallaroos bring together talent from across the country. Ranging in age from just 17 years old to 33, the 32-player squad will field 23 athletes for the game at North Sydney Oval, in what promises to be a thrilling match between two closely ranked international sides.

Head of Communications for the Wallaroos, Alicia Newton, says of the upcoming exciting clash: “International Women’s Rugby is very competitive globally. As a nation we are ranked sixth in the world and Wales are ranked 10th.”

“We’ve got a good rivalry building with Wales, having lost to them last year in Wales before beating them a few weeks later in a tournament. Fans also likely remember when Maya Stewart scored a try in the Wales match in South Africa last year that went viral.”

It was also last year that our Wallaroos took out the World Rugby’s WXV2 Competition as well. What this means for the crowd is that you’re going to see some absolutely cracking Rugby on our home turf.

Along with the thrill of cheering on our Australian women’s team fans will be witnessing a historic moment with Wales travelling to Australia for the first time ever for a Test series.

For the Wallaroos, this fixture is certainly about national pride but it’s also about refining their performance before heading to the UK for the 2025 Women’s Rugby World Cup – and our last chance to cheer them on live before they go.

“It is our final Test match before the Rugby World Cup,” confirms Alicia. “This is crucial preparation.”

Wallaroos captain Emily Chancellor also highlights the significance of the match for the team’s momentum: “We’ve won two of five games at the halfway point of our season, so we really want to ensure we turn that into four from seven leading into the World Cup.

“There are over 300,000 tickets sold in the UK for the World Cup and our pool is a great challenge, so we want more momentum going into the tournament.”

For Wallaroos centre Georgina Friedrichs, the match is also a rare chance to play in front of a home crowd. Friedrichs, who lives in Lane Cove, is looking forward to taking the field in familiar territory.

“I love the North Shore area to live in, it’s close to the city and the Northern Beaches, where I often spend my time,” she says.

“I can’t wait for the opportunity to play at North Sydney Oval—it will be a special occasion. It’s amazing to play on home turf, and especially in Sydney. We last played as a team at North Sydney Oval in 2019, but this will be different with the Rugby World Cup just around the corner.”

“We hope the local crowd support will help us break a new women’s rugby record in Australia.”
