Approaching its 100th birthday, there are still few places more inviting than the Royal Avalon with its crackling fireplace, homely lounges, and the kind of atmosphere that instantly makes you want to settle in for the afternoon.

About to celebrate a centenary of serving the local community, the landmark Royal Avalon has entered a new chapter. Cofounders Tom, Andy, Brad, and Lyndon, have recently carefully reimagined the space while preserving everything locals have always loved about it.

Heritage-green walls, century-old character, charming antique decor and furniture, proudly framed historical photographs, and a fireplace recognised as one of Sydney’s best pub fireplaces. It is a welcoming and warm space filled with comfort.

Brad Jacobsen, a cofounder of The Royal Avalon, says creating that feeling was always central to the vision.

“When people walk in, we want them to feel at home and stay for hours. The comfy lounges, fireplace, and general atmosphere mean people don’t want to leave.”

The building dates back to 1926 and is has earned a heritage listing under the Pittwater Local Environmental Plan. While the team saw enormous potential in the venue, preserving its history remained a priority from day one.

An advisory board, including a former Mayor of Pittwater and a member of the Avalon Historical Society, helps guide major decisions and ensure the building’s heritage remained at the heart of every renovation and improvement.

That same level of care extended well beyond the restoration itself. The guest experience, atmosphere, and future direction of the venue were all approached with a deep respect for the building’s story and sense of place.

“The club turns 100 in October this year, and every part needs to be celebrated,” Brad says. “We never wanted people to think they were walking into the latest pub. We wanted people to feel like it has been here for a century.”

Familiar Comfort Food Favourites, Beautifully Prepared At The Royal Avalon

With Avalon already home to a thriving dining scene, The Royal Avalon focused on doing something timeless: creating the kind of pub people want to spend time in. The menu masters the art of comfort and quality, pairing familiar favourites with weekly specials. This combination gives diners something new to look forward to, from curry nights and T-bone specials to a traditional Sunday roast.

“The opportunity was in creating a traditional pub-style environment,” Brad says. “High-quality food, done in a pub way, and affordable enough for people to come back again and again.”

On a recent visit, the baja barra tacos arrived piled high with fresh slaw and house salsa, delivering plenty of crunch and brightness. The five-spice calamari was crisp, tender, and generously portioned. At the same time, the club salad brought together grilled broccolini, roasted eggplant, hummus, pine nuts, and panko crumbed chicken in a dish that felt both hearty and fresh. Each plate was vibrant, satisfying, and made for passing around the table with friends.

Good Company and Great Music at Avalon Beach’s Favourite Venue

Live music has become one of The Royal’s most loved features. Here, local artists and fresh talent take to the stage throughout the week. Depending on the weather, performers set up indoors or outside in the garden. This creates an easygoing atmosphere where guests can settle in with a drink, sing along to familiar favourites, or enjoy an impromptu dance.

The venue’s connection to the golf course remains as strong as ever. Players often wander in after a round for a well-earned drink. Meanwhile families spread out across the grounds as children and dogs race around. Inside and out, there is a relaxed energy that makes everyone feel welcome, whether they have come for lunch, live music, golf, or simply a quiet seat by the fire.

It is not unusual to see several generations sharing the same space, all enjoying the venue in their own way.

“We created a venue that didn’t focus on age; it focused on an incredible experience,” Brad says. “The memories being created are happiness.”

As The Royal Avalon prepares to celebrate its centenary later this year, the team’s pride is reflected in the community that continues to gather there. It remains a place where stories are shared, traditions are honoured, and new memories are made every day.
